Happy Anniversary, Evans Lam Square!
On October 5, 2016, the University of Rochester dedicated Evans Lam Square, thanks to the incredible generosity of Evans Lam ’83, ’84S (MBA) and Susanna Lam. To celebrate this milestone, the students, faculty, staff, and library lovers of all kind, join together to thank you for the many ways that Lam Square has enhanced our lives and made the University of Rochester ever better.
A Thank You from the Dean
Evans Lam Square has been transformative to the lives of students using Rush Rhees Library. It is a vibrant gateway to information, a respite between classes, a technology showcase, and a programming hub. With a variety of seats—cozy, studious, and collaborative—students find their space and feel at home.
Thank you Evans and Susanna! Students, staff and faculty are indebted to you. Your generosity and support are remembered every single day!
Mary Ann Mavrinac
Vice Provost and Andrew H. and Janet Dayton Neilly Dean of the University of Rochester Libraries
From the time it opened, Evans Lam Square has become an inspirational hub for creativity, innovation, collaboration and deep thought. It’s also a place for friendship, relaxation, laughter and meaningful connection. In addition to the extraordinary that happens on a day-to-day basis, Evans Lam Square has become the perfect spot for celebration. Here are just a few of the special moments that have happened over 365 days.
“In a good bookroom you feel in some mysterious way that you are absorbing the wisdom contained in all the books through your skin, without even opening them.”
Words of Thanks
“Lam Square opened up this space for students to be able to interact both with faculty like me and with each other so they can start to think about new ideas. It encourages collaboration.”
Nicholas Gresens, Senior Lecturer, Religion and Classics
“Lam Square and the Q&i desk bring the librarians closer to me.”
Bo Peng ’18, Beijing, China
“The Lam Square renovations have made a really wonderful impact on the energy in the space. It’s more modernized but it stayed true to the historical aspects like the wood bookshelves and the original architecture.”
Nicole Hesse ’19, Washington, D.C.
“Lam Square has a technology sandbox and as someone who is always curious, I love stopping by there and seeing what’s being offered. There are all kinds of new things for students to explore.”
Jon Campanaro ’18, Elizabethtown, PA
